Quintana Roo is one of Mexico’s fastest-growing states, driven primarily by international tourism centred around Cancún, Playa del Carmen, Tulum and the Riviera Maya.
Tourism represents one of Mexico’s largest foreign exchange earners, and the region continues to experience above-average population growth, commercial development and hotel construction.
Electricity demand within the Yucatán Peninsula has grown faster than much of the national average while historically relying on limited transmission connections and imported natural gas generation. During periods of peak tourism and high summer temperatures, the region has experienced system constraints and reduced reserve margins.

The Los Girasoles project is therefore strategically significant because it:

• Increases locally generated renewable electricity;
• Reduces dependence on imported power from other regions;
• Strengthens grid reliability through integrated battery storage;
• Supports continued tourism, commercial and residential expansion
• Contributes to improving energy security within one of Mexico’s highest-growth economic regions.
